The season is changing again, and if you’re like me, you’re ready to make some changes too! Here are a few fun, easy crafting projects that can be done either outdoors, or using things like spring flowers and plants. If you stop by the library this spring or summer, you might get the chance to do one of these projects in person!
1. Reverse Tie-Dye

Did you ever want to tie-dye something…in reverse? Are you asking yourself what reverse tie-dying even means? If the answer to either question is yes, look no further! Reverse tie-dying starts with a dark item of clothing rather than a light one, and uses bleach and water rather than fabric dye. Ideally, this craft should be done outside or in a very well-ventilated area. Follow the steps below!
- Gather your materials: a dark item of clothing (think black, dark gray, navy, etc), rubber bands, spray bottle, rubber gloves, ¾ cup of water, and ¼ cup of bleach
- Clean your item of clothing, and leave it slightly damp
- Bind your item of clothing with the rubber bands in a pattern you like, or just get random with it!
- Mix your ¾ cup of water and ¼ cup of bleach in your spray bottle
- Spray your article of clothing with the bleach mixture
- Let sit for around 30 minutes, then unbind, wash, and hang to dry!
2. Dried Flower Petal Bath Salts

Bath salts are often sold as a luxury item, but are actually very inexpensive and easy to make at home. Add dried flower petals for extra scent and aesthetic!
- Gather your materials: a glass jar, a large bowl, 1 cup of Epsom salts, ½ cup of sea salt, essential oil (any floral scent, you will use about 10 drops), and ½ cup of dried flower petals
- Mix the two salts together in a large bowl
- Add the essential oil and mix well to combine
- Add the dried flower petals and mix well again
- Pour the mixture into a glass jar and seal tightly
3. Hand-dyed Napkins

Skip the expensive home goods stores and customize your own fabric napkins in any colors you choose! This craft requires very few materials and only takes a few steps to complete
- Gather your materials: white fabric napkins, paint brush, fabric paint in any color, and water
- Soak napkins in water and wring them out
- Brush fabric paint onto napkins from bottom to top in small strokes, diluting with water as you go to create an ombre effect
- Hang to dry completely before use
4. Essential Oil Potpourri

Don’t put away that essential oil from your bath salts yet! Use it to create this simple stovetop potpourri with a fresh, springy scent
- Gather your materials: essential oil (for optimal results, use two or three different scents, such as lavender, spearmint, or lime), lime slices, water, and fresh mint
- Put about 10 drops of each essential oil in a small pot
- Add lime slices and fresh mint
- Cover with water up to about an inch below the brim of the pot
- Simmer on the stovetop for a delightful, refreshing spring scent!
