The Trentoniana Department’s collection of photographs includes the City’s earliest captured images of events, clubs, sports teams, political activities, public celebrations, street scenes, buildings, people, and more. They date from the mid-1800s to the present and are of various sizes.
Currently stored in boxes and organized by subject, the collection of over 200,000 photographs are only accessible in the Trentoniana Room at this time. Plans are underway to begin digitizing images and making them available online.
The Central Jersey Genealogical Club scanned over 350 unidentified photographs in the collection, which are now posted to our Flickr page and also accessible by clicking on the photos below. Let us know if you recognize anyone.
“It is useful to remember that history is to the nation as memory is to the individual. As persons deprived of memory become disoriented and lost, not knowing where they have been and where they are going, so a nation denied a conception of the past will be disabled in dealing with its present and its future.” – Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr., “Folly’s Antidote,” New York Times (1 January 2007)
