One Book One Trenton is a city wide reading event beginning in September 2020 and running through Spring of 2021.
The book we will be reading is Kindred by Octavia Butler. Kindred is a novel about Dana, a young Black writer, who is celebrating her twenty-sixth birthday with her new husband when she is snatched abruptly from her home in California and transported to the antebellum South. Dana is drawn back repeatedly through time to the plantation, and each time the stay grows longer, Dana makes hard choices to survive and safely return to her own time.
Participants can read the novel, graphic novel, or listen to the audiobook or online play!
Throughout the coming months, we will have events, film screenings, and discussions relating to the books themes of Black history, slavery, and racial justice, the genre of Afrofuturism, and more.
